The town of Františkovy Lázně was founded on 27 April 1793 as the "Village of Emperor Franz". On this day, the designs of the first ground plan created by Abbé Gruber were approved by decree of the new Emperor Francis I. The construction of the baths began almost immediately. Under Gruber´s direction, the first buildings of the new baths, the Francis Spring Pavilion and the Social House, were erected along National Avenue, the future social centre of the town. In the early 19th century, the original avenues lining the main avenue were gradually transformed into English parks. Two generations of town gardeners, the Soukups, were most responsible for the development and maintenance of the parks.
Thanks to the abundance of natural healing resources, Františkovy Lázně was declared a spa resort. There are 21 mineral springs, therapeutic gas and a specialty of Františkovy Lázně is the treatment with peat. Františkovy Lázně is the first peat spa in the world.
