Healing mineral springs

Mariánské Lázně is located in an area that is exceptionally rich in natural healing resources. Around 100 springs spring up in the relatively small area of Mariánské Lázně and its surroundings. Due to the small area in which the springs originate and the different chemical composition of the springs, Mariánské Lázně is a world rarity in the field of balneology. Thanks to the different chemical composition of the healing springs, a wide range of diseases can be treated in Mariánské Lázně. The temperature of the springs varies between 7 and 10 °C. They are therefore cold acids. The mineral water of six main springs - Křížový pramen, Rudolfův pramen, Karoline pramen, Lesní pramen, Ambrožův pramen and Ferdinandův pramen - is used for drinking cures.

The first written references to the healing effects of the local mineral springs were made as early as 1528 by monks from the nearby Teplá monastery, who were the first to explore the springs.

Drinking cure

Drinking is an important and, in the case of kidney and urinary tract diseases, the main part of the spa treatment. The amount of mineral water to be used in the drinking cure is determined by the spa doctor based on the patient´s diagnosis and overall health. This amount of mineral water recommended by the doctor should never be exceeded by spa guests. Mineral springs should be drunk 1 to 3 times a day - ideally on an empty stomach. Drinking mineral springs before meals increases the effectiveness of the drinking treatment - better absorption of the mineral substances is possible. Mineral water is drunk from special 220 ml spa cups. Doctors recommend that the drinking treatment be carried out directly at the spring and that the spa cup be drunk in small sips (within 3 to 5 minutes). If two cups are to be drunk, there is a minimum five-minute break in the drinking treatment. It is recommended to finish the drinking treatment at least a quarter of an hour before eating.

Drinking therapy should always be consulted with a doctor, as poorly chosen drinking therapy can be rather harmful. The mineral water of a particular spring is suitable for a particular health problem, but may be highly unsuitable for another.

In addition to drinking cures, mineral springs are also used for mineral baths or inhalations.
